PEM® Micro Self-Clinching Standoff Fasteners

New PEM® micro self-clinching standoff fasteners introduce ideal hardware for spacing or stacking applications in compact electronic assemblies. These micro standoffs can serve as practical, cost-effective, and permanently secure solutions enabling quicker assembly of devices ranging from hand-held consumer electronics to medical equipment, among others.

PEM Type MSO4 micro self-clinching standoffs are manufactured from 400 Series stainless steel and are engineered with threads as small as M1.0 / #00 and in lengths as short as 2mm / .080". They can be installed into sheet metal (including 300 Series stainless steel) as thin as 0.4mm / .016" with maximum hardness up to HRB 88 on the Rockwell "B" scale.

The micro standoffs clinch permanently into place by simply pressing them into a properly sized mounting hole using a punch and anvil until the fastener's head is flush with the sheet. Upon installation, they become a permanent part of an assembly, will not loosen or fall out, and provide strong and reusable load-bearing threads. Installing them automatically can further reduce costs by accelerating production and eliminating any need to handle the small parts.

These RoHS-compliant micro standoffs are part of a growing family of PEM micro self-clinching hardware products.

Atlas Plus+Tite Blind Threaded Steel Inserts Introduced with Straight Shank Design

The family of Atlas® Plus+Tite® blind threaded steel inserts has expanded with a newly introduced version featuring a straight shank design.  This fastener joins Plus+Tite pre-bulbed inserts in offering superior pullout resistance when installed permanently in plastics or thin sheet metal.  Both types provide reliable and reusable threads for “blind” attachment applications, including tubing and extrusions, where only one side is accessible for fastener installation and component assembly.  A single mating screw completes the final attachment process.

Atlas Plus+Tite inserts can install permanently into single, variable, or multiple-thickness materials as thin as .020” / 0.50mm.  The straight shank design will accommodate a smaller mounting hole and the pre-bulbed inserts will require less installation load.

Both install from the accessible “front” side of a component.  Installation can be accomplished anywhere and at any stage in the shop or field using either a spin-pull tool or spin-spin tool, depending on insert type.  A shoulder on both styles serves as a self-locating feature.

The inserts are available with internal formed threads in sizes #10-32 through 3/8-16 and M6 through M10.  Threads are compatible with unified grade 5 or metric class 9.8 screws.  All insert surfaces are plated for superior corrosion-resistance.

Micro Plastics Introduces New Line of Spring Washers

Micro Plastics Inc. introduces a new line of Spring Washers. These new specialized spring washers add to Micros' already extensive inventory of over 2000 plastic washers.

Spring Washers are molded in an acetal material that has excellent spring properties, is light-weight and inexpensive. The material is electrical and thermal insulating and corrosion resistant. Acetal lubricity allows use in rotating assemblies as well as under water applications. Spring washers are used to eliminate rattles, take up tolerance variables and provide accurate spacing and tension. These may be used singly in parallel, in series or in series parallel for a wide range of deflection and load capacity.

Seven sizes of Spring Washers are available to fit standard screws from #6 through 3/8" and metric screw sizes of M3.5 through M10.

Bossard Introduces eco-lubric® as Alternative to Lubricated Fasteners

Bossard continues to grow its offering of fastener product solutions with the introduction of its eco-lubric® brand.  This innovative product solution is a non-electolytically applied tribological dry coating.  It is a thin layered coating with integrated lubricating properties and also offers corrosion protection.

Bossard eco-lubric® is simple, clean, safe and economical.  It is made up of fluoropolymers and organic submicroscopic solid lubricant particles that are dispersed in carefully selected synthetic resin blends and solvents.  The anti-friction coating (AFC) creates a smooth film to balance unevenness of the fastener surface, thereby optimizing friction under extreme loads and working conditions.  The synthetic resin ensures improved corrosion protection.

In salt spray tests performed under EN ISO 9227 NSS, screws and nuts with the eco-lubric® coating indicated corrosion protection of >200 hours (to red rust).  Laboratory tests for friction coefficients, according to DIN 946/ISO 16047, show eco-lubric® provides a tight friction coefficient range of 0.10 – 0.12 µ.

Bossard eco-lubric® is available in black and silver.

New Mountz NF-Series Brushless Electric Torque Screwdrivers Save Money and Improve Quality

Designed for high production environments, the E-DRIV NF-Series feature a high performance brushless motor design that provides durability and reduces the standard maintenance costs for electric screwdrivers.

San Jose, CA (PRWEB) August 12, 2010 -- Mountz, Inc. introduces the NF-Series, a new line of brushless electric torque screwdrivers as the premier assembly tool in the Mountz E-DRIV brand of power tool products. Designed for high production environments, the E-DRIV NF-Series feature a high performance brushless motor design that provides durability and reduces the standard maintenance costs for electric screwdrivers. Additionally, costly mechanical micro switches have been eliminated in the NF series in favor of non-contact magnetic sensors.

In addition to lower maintenance costs, the NF tool is ESD certified, ensuring less than 1 Ohm at the bit tip. ESD management in power tools ensures product quality, cost savings and a reduction in overall ESD failures. Manufacturing engineers involved with microelectronic products are aware of the importance of controlling Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) failures. Lapses in preventing the occurrence of electrostatic discharge can affect production yields, manufacturing costs, product quality, product reliability, reputation and profitability.

Static damage to electronic components can be realized as catastrophic or latent failures. Catastrophic failures are easier to detect and resolve. With this type of failure the part is “dead” and will not function. It may be costly to repair but is easy to manage. With latent failures the problem is much worse as the failure may not be detected in testing but is a “time bomb” waiting to happen. Since this product will get into the field and cause intermittent problems or failure in the field, it can be a much more costly problem.

The NF-Series features an Over Heat Protection (OHP) and Over Current Protection (OCP) that protects the electric screwdriver from damage or malfunction. The temperature detection powers down the unit and resets automatically when unit restores to acceptable levels. The NF-Series is designed with a LED display that signals the tool’s status for the operator to clearly view.

The benefits of the versatile NF-Series are available in three styles for a variety of assembly applications.

The different styles of the brushless electric screwdrivers provide manufacturers flexibility and ability to select the proper tool for their application. The standard NF-Series models are available in “Push-to-Start” or “Lever-Start” configuration with various models covering a torque range of 2.6 to 39 inch-pounds. The power tool features a built-in adjustable speed control, which allows an operator the ability to adjust the RPM directly on the tool.

Mountz offers a NF-Series “Plus” model that features a selectable Double Hit Mode for soft joint applicationsand a selectable Soft Start mode. When an electric screwdriver runs down a fastener and the tool clutches off once the preset torque is achieved there can be some joint relaxation that can occur. Joint relaxation is caused by the surface of part(s) embedding or by "soft parts" such as gaskets, plastics or spongy material, which collapses under the clamping force created in a torque condition. The clutch of the NF-Series “Plus” electric screwdriver works twice at the set torque under the "Double Hit" mode. The Double Hit will increase the repeatability accuracy at the target torque by double-checking. The “Soft Start” mode is for applications that require the power tool to slowly ramp-up to its operating speed, perfect for plastic or sensitive applications. There are 3 different time settings for the Soft Start mode, which are (0.2, 0.4 & 0.6 seconds).

There is an additional “Time Control and Auto Reverse” model that allows the operator the ability to set the start, stop and operating direction of the brushless electric screwdriver. This power tool model is ideal for installation of helically wound inserts, light tapping or gauging applications.

Controlling torque is quintessential for companies to ensure their product's quality, safety and reliability isn't compromised. The failure of a three-cent fastener that isn’t properly tightened can lead to catastrophic or latent failures. Fasteners that are insufficiently torqued can vibrate loose and excessive torque can strip threaded fasteners. Mountz electric torque screwdrivers are designed for precision torque control and have become the state-of-the-art in innovative assembly. Using a quality electric screwdriver has become increasingly important for many companies to ensure that proper torque is being applied and maintains gauge requirements associated with the ISO 9001 Quality Standard.
